Hair
I Am Not My Hair

Hair is almost always a topic of conversation amongst myself and my friends. Of course it is…it’s a big topic! As an Indian woman, I know ALL about the unwanted moustache, the unibrow, the sideburns, and the Punjabi mane that others expect to be tamed. As a woman of colour who’s grown up in the UK, I used to feel the pressure to conform to certain beauty standards. And I know I’m not the only one. But regardless of toxic beauty messaging that dominate our social media feeds, we need to truly embrace the reality that physical appearance doesn’t define us. We are so much more than our hair. We are so much more than our skin.

India Arie said it best.

Personality Beyond Brows

My eyebrows may shape my features, but they don’t shape my personality.

We can go from a 90s over-plucked-almost-non-existent eyebrow to a perfectly groomed arch or an untamed unibrow, and still be the same beautiful person on the inside. The shape of our furry little facial friends which exist to prevent sweat trickling into our eyes don’t say shit about who we are. And while they may be there on an evolutionary level to help us convey expression, they by no means make us more or less expressive. Our eyebrows – thick, thin, or completely absent say NOTHING about us. Let’s embrace our personalities beyond our brows.

My hair may frame my face, but it’s not a framework for who I am.

Whether we’re rocking a sleek bob or a wild mane of curls, our hair doesn’t determine our worth. No matter the texture, length, or colour of your hair, it’s uniquely yours, and it’s fabulous. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that our hair defines us. ‘But my hair is my thing’. We’ve all said it or heard it. Sorry to break it to you love, but no it’s not. Your hair is not your thing. YOU are your thing. So go and be your incredible self regardless of what’s growing from your head. Celebrate a great hair day by all means! But please don’t let external beauty define you because you are sooo much more than that.

Don’t even get me started on my lashes. Sure, they may short and a little lacklustre, but they hold no bearing on the way I see life.

Whether you’re using extensions, mascara, or are coming completely as you are (love that by the way), we all have the power to light up a room with our infectious energy and sparkling personalities, regardless of our lashes. Our inner beauty shines through, no matter what. Bottom line is – our lashes serve the purpose of keeping dust out of our eyes. Let’s not make it bigger than it needs to be.

Frizzy Hair, Don’t Care

One of my main areas as a life coach revolves around breaking free from bullshit beauty standards. Regardless of culture, expectations, or society, my clients are working towards stripping back layers to reveal their true authentic selves. Beauty standards play a big role in this. Read more about my coaching services here.

Focusing on What Truly Matters, and That’s Not Hair!

The truth is, we all have our own unique beauty that comes from within. Living a happy life full of self-love is about embracing our quirks and celebrating what makes us different. Whether it’s our hair, our skin, or our body shape, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to beauty. Let’s stop judging ourselves and others based on our physical appearance. Instead, let’s focus on what truly matters – our inner beauty, our kindness, our empathy, and our strength. Because at the end of the day, that’s what truly makes us beautiful.

I am neither the hair that I removed, neither the hair that remains. And neither are you.
